Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?
If you're wondering, “Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery?,” one consideration is your body mass index or BMI. Calculate your BMI below.
To be a candidate for weight loss surgery at NWH, our patients must have:
A BMI of 40 or higher or
A BMI of 35 may qualify if an additional high-risk medical
condition exists and is caused or worsened by obesity
In addition, our patients meet with our team of bariatric surgeons (including our New York weight loss surgeon) to discuss the following criteria:
Weight Loss surgery is a very serious undertaking, therefore a candidate must have tried non-surgical treatments such as dietary programs, behavioral modification, and exercise.
There must be no underlying, medical or hormonal cause for obesity. Such conditions are rare and require treatment of the root cause.
A candidate must participate in our comprehensive patient education and become fully informed about their weight loss surgery procedure (gastric banding or lap band surgery, gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery) and what can be expected, both as to weight loss and possible complications.
A candidate must demonstrate a willingness to accept the risks of bariatric surgery and to make dramatic lifelong changes in his/her lifestyle, dietary habits, exercise, and to commit to medical follow-up.
