Bariatric Surgery and Diabetes
Bariatric Surgery Can Effectively Treat Type 2 Diabetes
Recent studies have shown a link between bariatric surgery and diabetes. Patients with Type 2 diabetes who had bariatric surgery (Lap Band or Sleeve Gastrectomy) were able to significantly lower, if not abolish, abnormal blood sugar levels, therefore eliminating the need for diabetes medicine. Patients involved in the same studies that were treated exclusively with drugs, diet and exercise were only able to minimally lower abnormal blood sugar levels and still require diabetes medicine.
Individuals who are overweight or obese have increased health risks from Type 2 diabetes. Higher body weights are also associated with increased mortality rate.
At NWH Surgical Weight loss Program in Mount Kisco, NY., we recognize that the successful, long-term management of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other co-morbidities depends on a dedicated, multidisciplinary team working together with the patient and their family.
